July
Paint out at the Children's Festival
Britt Grounds in Jacksonville
Saturday
6:00 PM
July 1

Notice:
We decided to cancel due to weather and attendance.
~Sheri

We have a special opportunity to share our art with children at the annual Children’s Festival. They pride themselves in giving kids an opportunity to explore hands on activities, many times art. It’s a tradition for many families in our community. (In fact, I (Sheri) have taken my children and now grandchildren ever since Charity was very young. I have great pictures of her and Laura with their faces painted.)

The Children’s Festival often has various artists perform through out the Festival as a way to showcase unique things, inspire individuals and to create an overall sense of merry. Because the festival is focused on children and their families, they do not allow vendors to sell or advertise. Volunteers run the festival. So we won’t sell anything.  So if you like the idea of supporting a community event and art, we are welcome to participate.

What will we do? Show up early enough to park and hike in. Bring a light weight paint set-up that is easy to carry, set up and paint.  Of course enjoy the children, who no doubt will be curious and want to watch. They may have questions too.

The plein air painting time will be 6pm on Saturday, anybody wanting to come needs to get their name to Lona Dillard ahead of time so it can be on the volunteer lists and they can get in for free.

Let me, Sheri or Austin know if you are coming as well.

Here are some letters sent to Austin Maloney from Lona, the director of the Children's Festival.

Oh happy day!  I'd love for you to do what you do best.....create a painting.

Do you have any experience with Children's Festival?  We take over the Britt grounds for 4 days in July.  We have 3 sessions: Saturday July 12th 4:30-8:30, Sunday 13th 4:30-8:30 and Monday 14th 10:00-1:30. Attendees pay $3 to get in and have 35+ arts and crafts booths to explore. We generally have an attendance of 2000-3000 per session.

I think it would be so wonderful for kiddos to see an artist at work.  You could set up wherever you like and begin.  I suspect you may be approached by interested individuals and I'd be interested to hear your thoughts about how you might want to handle that...we could support you however needed.  I'm looking into asking additional plein air artists to join us as well, and I think Saturday evening would be a nice showcase.

So, what do you think?
Talk to you soon,
Lona

Hi Austin,

This sounds like quite a bit of fun!  So Saturday night will be our opening session.  Things get started about 4:30 and run until 8:30.  Parking is always an issue in Jacksonville.....those that arrive by 4:00 generally have many choices, those that come later need to walk more.  That said, do you know how long you might want to stay?  We're really flexible on our end.

Also, we do have our volunteers/performers check in, so I'll need your (as well as any others) basic info: name, email, phone number, address.

Let me know what you think!
Lona

Hope you are working on something wonderful to bring. I am hoping to have a new one. See you then.

Update:  Our good friend, Ilene Gienger Stanfeld is the critique juror for this month.
Her work is fun and very fresh. She is accomplished both as an artist and a teacher... very kind and helpful. Check out her work at: Ilene Gienger Fine Art.

The critique was really great! Ilene is a delight, full of joy. It is encouraging to be around her and listen to her speak. Her love for art is infectious. She also had wonderful insight on how to improve our paintings. My take away is to aspire to be more creative... out of the box and come up with original ways to make my work stand apart as unique.

The next critique will be July 28th, same time and same place. Christina Madden will be the judge.

The weather is expected to be good, actually 91 degrees; but who knows as it is springtime in Southern Oregon... as diverse as it is glorious!  :-)
The emphasis this month will continue on inspiration. Whether it is your times with the Lord, being out in His creation, viewing really great art or visualizing your next painting. We found inspiration a few weeks ago at Hanley Farm, just being out on that glorious spring day. It just felt good to be there... we didn't even want to leave. Charity was still painting when I left about 5:30!

So join us at Lithia Park. We will be there to have fun and be an encouragement to one another. Bring your camera, sketch pad and pencil, pastels, watercolors, oils or whatever your favorite medium is.  Hope to see you there.

June

The following invitation came from the Southern Oregon Historical Society through Southern Oregon Society of Artists (aka SOSA). It sounds like a really fun event that we hope to attend.

Artist Day at Hanley Farm
June 14th, 2014

Hanley Farm House
Hello! You are invited to participate in Artist Day at Hanley Farm, June 14. This year we expect a significant visitor increase, as we’re partnering with the farm’s Summer Lawn Party. Which means more exposure, and potentially more sales, for you! Participation is the same as last year – arrive early to set up. There is NO FEE. We do however, ask that you donate 10% of the proceeds from your sales to the farm.

The Summer Lawn Party is a new event, and we’re excited to invite you to join in! So plan to come out, sell your works, and enjoy the ambiance of Hanley Farm. You’re encouraged to practice your craft. And, if you’d like, please display works you wish to sell.

I’ll be updating more information as plans progress.

Or take a guided tour of the historic Hanley House. And of course, much MORE, including - music by The Rogue Suspects; a flag field; a presentation by Chelsea Rose, of SOU Archaeology lab; traditional games such as badminton and horseshoes; and farm-fresh food from the Hanley Kitchen. All you need to do is show up at 9am, definitely no later than 10:30am (event starts at 11am), and choose your spot to set up. That’s it! Due to the number of events taking place this year, artists are asked to set up on the front lawn of the Hanley Farm House, and surrounding areas.

As in past events, you’ll have several great sites, including the lawn in front of Hanley House, the area to the left of the pavilion, the lovely spring house area, Jackson Creek area, etc., to set up in.
